NURS 1156 – Week Twelve – in reflection

  • How will you use these documents in your own professional practice?
  • What questions were left unanswered for you? What will you do to obtain the answers?

I plan on basing my whole Nursing career and professional practice on the rules and regulations of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario. I not only want to protect myself and the public but I also want to provide my clients with the best possible support. I believe that every nurse should be expected to follow these to the highest standard as well. I follow guidelines fairly well and pride myself on following rules and I don’t see it being any different with my career, especially if it involves the community’s health and well-being

As for unanswered questions, after checking out the website and learning so much I don’t feel like I have any however if I find myself looking for answers I plan on doing research by reading, emailing the appropriate organizations, people or just asking my co-worker or professors, if I am still in school.

NURS 1156 – Week Eleven – in reflection

  • Did this activity assist you in understanding the teaching/learningexperience?  Why or why not?
  • Will this information help you to identify your client’s learning needs in clinical practice?  Will it help you to be a better teacher?  Why or why not? If not, what other information do you require? How will you go about getting this information?
  • Give some thought as to how you can incorporate this information into your practice.

As my previous post mentioned each individual has their own way of learning, with this said the best way for me to teach someone is assess their learning needs and goals and planning a learning session based on those aspects. If there is a learner who can only read at a grade six level, I’m not going to teach them at college reading level, I’m going to simplify it so they can understand the material better. Maybe show visuals instead of giving them alot to read. Maybe even demostrate what they need to learn, if possible of course. Maybe even ask them which is the best way they learn. Communication is key.

In my future practice I plan on taking my time, assessing each individual as much as I can and realizing that not everyone learns the same way, not everyone wants to learn what I have to offer however I need to do the best of my ability to share my information the best way they can learn.

NURS 1156 – Week Ten – In reflection

  • Reflect on how completing this case study has increased your understanding of factors influencing clients’ readiness to learn.
  • What have you learned about yourself as a teacher? As a learner?
  • What did you learn from this activity that is important for your practice?

There are many factors which can hinder a person’s readiness to learn. Culture, learning, disabilities, language and education are just some of the factors which makes it very difficult to learn completely.

I have learned one of the best ways for me to teach an individual is to assess them as much as possible so the learning materials can be delivered the best way for each person. Not everyone learns the same way. Not everyone has the same willingness to learn even if it will help their live or health.

As a learner I have learned that I have to be ready and willing to learn what I am being taught. I have to be interested or willing to change in order to get the full impact of what is being taught. I love learning however I have realized that some of the material don’t interest me as much so sometimes I have found myself shutting off from the world or even just stopped listening. I need to realize that sometimes it’s not easy to learn or even teach someone something that might be extremely valuable.

I believe each person should be responsible for what they learn, however if it’s not being delivered in a appropriate manner they won’t have the tools to do so.

NURS 1156 – Week eight – in reflection

  • Reflect on learning situations you have experienced in the past week.  Write a reflective journal that describes your most positive and negative learning experiences.  What have you learned regarding learning styles that will assist you in the future?
  • How do you plan to pursue and use your own learning style?  How will you expand your learning repertoire?  What will you do to facilitate your own productive learning?
  • What will you avoid because of its destructive influence on your learning?

I wouldn’t necessarily say there were positive or negative aspects this past week. My biggest challenge I would say is having enough time to get everything completed or even finding time to study or read over the assigned readings. I also find Biology to be challenging because so much information is given in a small alloted time. The good thing about that class is I am a very visual person and our professor not only uses slides but demonstrations and the cool thing this week was that he let us hold different types of bones so we could examine 1st hand how it all worked together.

I’m finding one of my biggest downfalls is listening to what other students are worrying about. I find that I am calm until I speak to them and it’s kind of like I take on their anxiety or nervousness. Each person has their own weakness and I just have to focus on what I am doing and how I will complete it.

With our biology class I find reading the chapter before hand and doing the questions helps me understand more so when he is lecturing I am able to participate and know what he is talking about. I need to start doing this more for each class although I do try to read as much as possible. One thing I think I could do is view the videos and do the quizzes before hand as well.

So this all this said I can’t say anything has been negative because I am learning, and as long as I am learning I look at it as a positive productive thing.

NURS 1156 – Week seven – In reflection

  • Complete the exercise entitled “My Beliefs About Nursing” adapted from the College of Nurses Professional Portfolio
  • Identify the ways in which you will apply the values and beliefs embodied in the Practical Nursing Program Philosophy.

Why do I want to become a nurse?

I know it sounds cliché however I do want to help people. After my moms heart attack I opened my eyes and saw the career I was meant for. One of the nurses that took care of my mom opened my eyes as well. He treated her so badly and made me sad just to think he could have been the last person she saw. This not only made me upset but determined to do a better job and show people that it’s not just about the money but about actually caring for people.

Why am I studying nursing now?

I can say I just had a oportunity to now, but in reality I just wanted it more now. So I wanted it happen and into reality. I always had some kind of excuse “I need a job because I need the money”, “I want to start a family”, ” I have a mortgage to pay” etc…. but I realized life’s not going to stop for me. NO MORE EXCUSES!!!!

What do you think you enjoy about nursing?

I really love working with the public. I really love knowing and the excitement of knowing each day will be different and I can make a change in someone’s life.

What do you think nursing will do for me?

Patience!!!!! I believe being in nursing you require patience. I sometimes lack patience. Working with different people with different issues will give me that.

What do I think I will contribute to the nursing profession?

I believe my caring nature, I genuine love for people is my best quality I can contribute. Everything else can be learned more of less but actually being a loving person is a gift.

Where do you see yourself in 2-5 years?

I see myself working towards becoming a nurse practitioner. first I want to continue to get my RN degree then seeing where it takes me. However my goal is to continue to get my BScN and working in an enjoyable and satisfying job and setting.

What kind of nurse do I want to be?

I want to be a caring, patient and determined nurse, who is willing to help everyone to the best of my ability.

In which field do you see yourself practicing?

I would love to center my career around children in some kind of capacity however I am keeping my options open. To be honest I haven’t decided as I have never worked in the field so I wouldn’t know where I would be best suited.

“Bound by paperwork, short on hands, sleep, and energy… nurses are rarely short on caring.”  ~Sharon Hudacek

NURS 1156 – Week six – In reflection

Why is it useful for nurses to question how they know what they think they know?

If we as nurses don’t question not only ourselves, our knowledges or others around us how would we know if we are doing things the right or best way possible? and we wouldn’t be where we are now. If Florence Nightingale hadn’t questioned the procedures who knows where we would be today.

There are always better ways to do things, better ways to communicate, better way of learning and without questions we would never figure this out. I credit all the advancements in the medical community to someone questioning what they person previous to them did.

We are all humans so mistakes can be made and if never questioned it we wouldn’t know any differently.

“If love can’t cure it, nurses can.”  ~Author Unknown

NURS 1156 – Week five – In reflection

  • Professionalism is largely learned. Reflect upon and identify personal attributes and academic endeavours that you think you will need to work on to enhance your professional image and behaviour over the next two years. Write these ideas down in a journal as learning goals.

Previously to enrolling in the Practical Nursing program at Niagara I worked for the District School Board of Niagara as a temporary Secretary. In this position and other positions I have held I believe I have learned a great deal of professionalism. From dealing with different students to dealing with different principles each day and everyone in between.

One of the most important area I would love to focus and work on over the next two years is my communication. Verbal, non-verbal and written are my weakest skills. As a nurse, communication is a large part of the career and I plan on improving by being aware of my and others body language, practicing my essay and document writing on a continuous basis, verbally communicating with as many people as possible in my placements, with peers and the public in general.

“The trained nurse has become one of the great blessings of humanity, taking a place beside the physician and the priest….” ~William Osler
